Modifiers

A word or a group of words that gives additional information about another word is said to be a modifier.

যে শব্দ বা শব্দগুচ্ছ বাক্যের মধ্যে কোন শব্দের পূর্বে বা পরে বসে সেই শব্দ সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত তথ্য প্রদান করে তাকে modifier বলে।

Modifiers are two kinds
    1. Pre modifiers: used before the words
    2. Post modifiers: used after the words

Pre-modifiers

1. Adjectives as pre modifier: Adjective is used before a noun or a noun phrase and works as a pre-modifier. This type of use of adjectives is called attributive use.

Ex.
a. He is a good man.
b. You are an intelligent boy.
 
2. Determiner as pre-modifier: সাধারণত determiners হলো

i. Article: a, an, the
ii. Demonstratives: this, that, these, those, such, each, every
iii. Possessives: many, some, any, no, all, both, few, a few, little, less, enough, several, certain, own, more, most, a great deal of, etc.

Ex.
   a. He saw some/many/several students there.
   b. The dog barked at the man.


3. Participle as pre-modifier:

i. Present participle as pre-modifier: মূল verb এর past participle form, সাধারণত adjectives এর মতো কাজ করে।

Ex.
    a. A flying bird can't be shot.
    b. A running train goes fast.
    c. A learned man is respected by all.


4. Participle phrases as pre modifier:

Ex.
   a. Hearing the news, father rushed there.
   b. Realizing the condition, the man changed his decision.


5. Noun or noun-adjective as pre modifier:

i. যখন দুটি  Noun পাশাপাশি বসে প্রথম noun টি পরের noun কে modify করে তখন তাকে adjective বলে।
ii. যখন দুটি Noun পাশাপাশি বসে প্রথম noun টি পরের  noun কে modify করে এবং প্রথম noun এর পূর্বে একটি adjective বসে তখন প্রথম noun কে noun-adjective বলে।

Ex.
   a. He gave me an English book.
   b. He gave me a nice English book. 


6. Intensifier as pre-modifier: intensifier দ্বারা সাধারণত বাক্যের অন্তভূক্ত কোন এর ওপর গুরুত্ব বা জোর প্রদান করা হয়, বাক্যে এটি adverb হিসেবে কাজ করে

Some common intensifiers: very, at all, enough, highly, really, quite, extremely, absolutely, completely, totally, exceptionally, so, too, etc.

Ex.
   a. The students were really intelligent.
   b. We must speak highly of our independence.



7. Adverb as pre-modifier: sometimes adverb is used as pre-modifier

Ex.
   a. The then Headmaster was a learned man.
   b. The down train will leave now.


8. Componund as pre-modifier: Compound হলো একাধিক শব্দের সমন্বয় যা একটি single adjective বা একটি single noun এর কাজ করে

Ex.
a.The man bought a brand-new car.
b. You are a hard-working boy.
